Who Qualifies for a Boiler Grant?

Brosnan Property Solutions has been providing quality property maintenance services to a growing number of customers since 1997. Of course, we have also expanded our knowledge base over the years, and this has enabled us to address a host of your concerns including gas boiler services. One common (and understandable) issue involves what may be involved when replacing an outdated boiler. Although the process itself can be rather expensive on occasion, you will be happy to learn that a growing number of individuals have already qualified for government assistance. It is still likely that you have several questions. What does this package entail? Who qualifies for a boiler grant? What is involved with the application process itself? We will look at these and other topics so that you can make an informed decision for yourself.

What is the Grant Called?

This ongoing grant is part of the larger Better Energy Home Scheme being offered throughout Ireland. It is primarily intended to provide financial aid to homeowners and landlords who may not be able to afford a standard installation. However, it is often simply referred to as a “boiler grant”. This package has been created by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).

This grant can provide up to €750 of financial assistance if an existing boiler is being upgraded to a more efficient model. However, it should be noted that this programme will only apply to new boilers associated with energy efficiency levels of 90 per cent or higher. This observation is valid for gas as well as oil-fired units.

Assuming that the upgrade has been completed, the funds provided by the boiler grant will be transferred directly to your bank account. This liquidity can then be used to offset the initial installation costs.

Who Qualifies for a Boiler Grant?

Who qualifies for a boiler grant and what requirements must be met? Several factors apply. Two stipulations include the use of modern materials and that the new boiler complies with current efficiency standards. There are additional factors that can often affect whether you qualify. These include:

  • Owning a structure that was constructed before 2006.
  • Using the services of a contractor recognised and certified by the SEAI.
  • Completing a Building Energy Rating (BER) after the upgrade has been completed.
  • Securing the services of a BER assessor who is registered with the SEAI.

The good news is that the team at Brosnans Property Solutions will provide further advice when needed. If you wish to learn more about who qualifies for a boiler grant, please take a moment to contact us directly.

How to Apply for a Boiler Grant

Now that we have looked at the basics of how the grant works and who can apply for it, lets look at the application process itself.

Identify the Most Relevant Upgrade

It should be mentioned that island homeowners may be eligible for up to 50 per cent of additional financial support. However, this does not apply to locations connected by a land bridge (primarily Valentia and Achill). Keep in mind that some boiler grants may not be appropriate for structures that were constructed before 1940. Speak with one of our team members to better understand which type of programme is the most suited for your needs.

Select a Qualified Advisor and a Registered Contractor

As mentioned previously, it is important to work with a professional that is registered with the SEAI. If you have found an appropriate service provider, a written contract should be created before any work commences. This is required to remain in compliance with current SEAI guidelines.

The same recommendations outlined above are relevant regarding selecting a contractor. The company should be easily found within a list of registered SEAI companies and even if the company claims that it is qualified, avoid procuring their services if no evidence is provided.

Applying for the Grant Itself

It is time to apply for the boiler grant. What are some recommendations to follow throughout the process? Let’s take a closer look.

First and foremost, there are two ways to begin the application process:

In terms of standard post, you will first need to call 01 808 2100 to have an official form sent to your home address. Once the form is completed, it can be mailed back to:
